The Story Behind the Griswold Cast Iron Skillet

The Story Behind the Griswold Cast Iron Skillet

Few pieces of old kitchenware have the character of a well-used cast iron skillet. Among collectors, Griswold is one of the names that continues to attract attention.

Founded in Erie, Pennsylvania, Griswold produced cast iron cookware for generations. The markings found on the bottom of a skillet can provide important clues about its age, manufacturer, and production period. Different Griswold logos and markings were used over the years, making the underside of the pan particularly interesting to collectors.

But the appeal isn’t only historical. These skillets were made as working kitchen tools. Scratches, seasoning, worn handles and small imperfections often tell the story of decades of use.

What Should You Look For?

When examining an old cast iron skillet, look at:

  • Manufacturer’s logo
  • Pattern or model number
  • Size number
  • Foundry markings
  • Handle design
  • Cooking surface
  • Cracks, repairs or excessive pitting

A skillet that looks ordinary at first glance can sometimes reveal a fascinating history once its markings are examined.

At All That Is Old, we believe the marks of age are part of the story.
